The golden monkey the scientific name is ‘Cercopithecus mitis kandti’.It’s approximately 48 to 67 cm for males and 45-53cm for females. It weighs 4.5-7kgs and has a life span of 19 years. Its habita is the viruga volcanoies in Uganda, Rwanda and DRC.
The Golden Monkey is a subspecies of the Blue monkey (or Sykes monkey). As a result of continuous divisions of forests, Cercopithecus species were isolated in different regions and therefore forced to adapt to these regions. The golden monkey is said to have diverged from Cercopithecus mitis during these isolation events (it is one of 8 subspecies of Cercopithecus mitis) and is now endangered. Because it has been seldom studied, little is known about the golden monkey, its behavior, and its ecology.
Physical Characteristics
Golden monkey males have a reddish color on their back and the dorsal part of their sides as well as some grizzled darker patches. Females are lighter in color and have less grizzled brown patches.
Behavior
Golden monkeys live in groups of between 30-80 individuals, usually led by one adult male. The female defends her territory, while males stay for a certain period after which they leave the group. These males are in the position to copulate with every female in the group; however, it is the females that solicit the males. These monkeys use a series of different calls to express themselves. Males use calls to communicate territoriality and fighting, females to display group cohesion and alertness, and subadults to display submissiveness and to stimulate mobbing behavior. They also communicate using visual expressions.
Diet
Golden monkeys eat about 20 to 30 plant species. They mostly rely on leaves, fruits, and invertebrates, but their main preference is bamboo. Predators
Humans are the main predators, as they encroach onto the golden monkeys’ habitat, set snares, and illegally cut down bamboo. Conservation efforts are being made to protect the golden monkey and their forest habitat; however, they are still threatened.

Those interested in golden monkey tracking will be required to book permits from the Uganda Wildlife Authority in the case of Mgahinga National Park and the Rwanda Development Board in the case of Volcanoes National Park. This golden monkey tracking permit will allow you some time with these monkeys before returning to your Lodge. At Platinum Safaris, we do handle permits, transport as well as accommodation if contacted.
In Maghinga National Park, one can go for a full-day golden monkey experience where one sets out with researchers and enjoys a whole day with golden monkeys. Chances of finding golden monkeys are high and should you fail to see them, Uganda Wildlife Authority terms and conditions will apply. Kindly confirm with us at the time of confirmation.
Because golden monkeys are found in Mgahinga and Volcanoes National Park, it is very possible to combine this activity with gorilla tracking in Bwindi National Park. which is closer to Mgahinga.
Challenge yourself and include golden monkey tracking in your Uganda safari and Platinum Safaris dedicated tour designers will be looking forward to attending to all your inquiries. Send us an email expressing all your interests, time of travel, number of days, and people in your group and we will customize a safari to suit your interests, time, and budget

The name Zanzibar is an Arabic word that is translated as ‘the coast of black people’. It is a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania. The island has the best beaches in the world – and this is not an exaggeration. If you love lazing around in the sun, then this is the place to go.

The Island of Zanzibar boasts pristine white sand beaches, abundant sunshine, exotic Swahili dishes, hospitable people, and luxury tourist resorts. If your idea of fun is to mix a jungle safari with lazing on the beach, then you have just found a hidden gem in Zanzibar.
1. Zanzibar is comprised of several islands, but two are the larger ones. Ugunja is the largest one and is erroneously called Zanzibar. The other is called Pemba.
2. Zanzibar has been home to intelligent humans (Homo sapiens) for more than 20,000 years.
3. The island is home to the almost extinct Zanzibar Red Columbus Monkey, the Zanzibar Servaline Genet, and the Zanzibar Leopard.

4. The capital of Zanzibar is called Zanzibar City and its most historic feature is the ancient Stone Town.

5. Due to its proximity to the Equator, Zanzibar is warm throughout the year and has equal days and nights (12 hours each) like most of the East African Countries.

6. Apart from tourism, the other economic activity in Zanzibar is spice growing. The island is sometimes fondly referred to as The Spice Island due to its cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and black pepper.

7. Some ancient potteries have been discovered in Zanzibar showing that it was a major trading route for the ancient Assyrians.

8. Amazingly, the shortest war ever recorded by man is the Anglo-Zanzibar War where the British bombarded the Beit al Hukum Palace and after 38 minutes, a ceasefire was called.

9. Thanks to Monsoon Winds, by the first century, Arabs, Persians, and Indians were sailing to Zanzibar in their fast sailing dhows.

10. Throughout history, the Persians, Portuguese, Omani, and British have fought to control the important island. It was seen as a gateway to mainland East Africa. The Sultanate of Omani was the first to trade slaves, cloves, and ivory from the East African Mainland.

In this sphere, there is time for everything, and platinum Safaris we consider that the time for you to plot a gorilla habituation remarkable experience safari to the pearl of Africa’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is now 2017 before families used for this experience are fully habituated. There are several motives why gorilla habituations experience now or why you should reserve your gorilla habituation permit now regardless of whether gorilla trekking is an option.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park offers discretionary activities for tourists to interrelate with the threatened mountain gorillas. The most popular activity to engage with mountain gorillas is gorilla trekking and this can be done in three countries Uganda (Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga National Park), Rwanda (Volcanoes National Park), Democratic Republic of Congo (Virunga National Park) Unlike gorilla trekking that is present in Uganda, DRC and Rwanda, Gorilla habituation experience is only in Uganda and is currently on the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park because it is where Uganda is having one gorilla family under habituation. Travelers must part with USD 1500.00 per person to enjoy interrelating with mountain gorillas.

With this experience, tourists are allowed to spend an enormous four hours compared to the one hour that is allowed for gorilla trekking. Once in Uganda, one can book do gorilla habituation experience in the southern part of Bwindi National Park. Bushawo and Bikingi have been the two gorilla families under habituation but information coming from this part of the forest is that Bushawo is now fully habituated leaving Bushaho as the only gorilla family open for gorilla habituation experience in 2017. Why does gorilla habituation experience can simply be explained by the fact that if the Bikingi gorilla family is fully habituated, there is a possibility that gorilla habituation experience will be temporarily suspended until other gorilla families are habituated Chances are also that the Bikingi gorilla family has less than a year to be fully habituated. We therefore call upon all those fascinated by gorilla habituation expeditions to get in contact with platinum safaris for permits and other services in 2017
